Resistance Training General Information
Simply put, resistance training is working a muscle or group of muscles against some form of resistance, whether that be gravity, springs or rubber bands.
The goal of most resistance trainers is to develop strength, muscular power and/or muscle mass.
A secondary consideration for most people, but one which is in fact equally important is the value resistance training has in injury prevention, rehabilitation and an aid in the prevention of body fat accumulation.
For the most part, resistance training at FNM emphasises the movement of muscle and not weight. With our focus on moving muscle, technique becomes much more important than how much weight you can lift so that muscles can be identified and targeted much more efficiently.
The advantage of putting the focus on the muscles and good technique are a much improved posture and spinal alignment, and a dramatically reduced risk of injury.
Benefits of a Resistance Training Program
-
Increase lean muscle mass
Resistance training exercise will help you to increase the amount of lean muscle mass on your body in as short a period as eight weeks. An increase in lean muscle generally coincides with a decrease in body fat levels so although you may not notice much change in your overall body weight, you will generally notice a change in muscle tone, strength and body shape as the changes start to take place.
-
Improve joint stability and connective tissue
Resistance training has proven to be of enormous value in strengthening muscles and tendons that are prone to injury due to past or present leisure time activities, or from genetic tendencies.
The appropriate application of resistance training also plays a major role in rehabilitation from injury and helps return damaged tissue and joints to full use and mobility.
-
Improve Bone Density
Weight bearing exercise is one of the three most important influences in the prevention and rehabilitation from Osteoporosis.
Anyone that has family history of osteoporosis or no longer has the protective benefit of estrogen should consider taking part in some form of resistance training program however we still recommend that you consult your medical practitioner prior to commencing any type of exercise program.
-
Improve your potential to burn energy
With the increase in lean muscle mass mentioned previously, your body has a greater capacity for burning fuel. Just like a car engine, the bigger the motor, the more fuel it burns to keep running.
Just imagine, even when you are asleep, larger muscles means more fuel is being burnt off.
Cardio Theatre
What is cardio theatre?
Cardio theatre is an area at FNM that allows you to exercise on treadmills, bikes, rowing machines etc while enjoying your favourite TV show or watching the latest music videos.
Fitness N motion has a range of large screen Plasma Televisions operating at all opening times as well as the latest Nightlife video music system with the latest video clips and music.
Updated every month, the video clips are also played over the in-house entertainment system so you can listen to the latest and best music in town while you exercise.
You choose whether you want to listen to the latest music over the in-house entertainment system or tune in to your favourite TV show with your own walkman and earphones.
Whatever you choose, exercise has never been more fun than at FNM!
What are the benefits of cardiovascular exercise?
-
It Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular Disease is currently the most costly disease for the Australian Health System and is the largest consumer of all Health resources.
We are not trying to scare you with these facts, but when considering that a large majority of these deaths could have been avoided, well that is scary.
A survey conducted in 1995 showed that people who do not participate in regular physical activity are almost twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease as those who participate. This means that if you participate in regular physical activity you may halve the risk that you will die from this disease.
It therefore makes a lot of sense to participate in regular physical activity doesn't it ?
Regular physical activity can come in a number of forms, but for the majority of people that do not have a manual job or participate in some form of sport, the choices left are not very great.
For those of you that have chosen to exercise at Fitness 'N' Motion, congratulations, regular exercise qualifies as regular physical activity and you have just doubled your chances of living longer.
-
It burns unwanted bodyfat
Regular cardiovascular exercise not only burns additional calories at the time of exercise to help you lose those unwanted kilos, but it also improves your bodies continued efficiency at burning fat as a fuel source.
As your body adapts to regular exercise and becomes fitter, the potential to burn bodyfat as a fuel improves greatly.
Regular exercise causes your body to adapt in a number of ways that ultimately allow your body to utilise oxygen and fat as fuel rather than relying on carbohydrate alone. The fitter you get, the more efficient your body becomes.
-
Improves cardio-respiratory efficiency
Just like all the other muscles in your body, the heart can be strengthened through exercise.
Regular exercise places an increased workload on your heart so that it is forced to adapt and improve. Your heart does this by increasing the muscle wall thickness so that as it gets stronger it is able to push out more blood with each stroke. This is called an increased stroke volume.
As you improve your fitness you will notice the difference in your resting heart beat as it slows down. This is due to your heart being able to push out the same amount of blood with less strokes, hence it can slow down but still do the same amount of work.
-
Gives you a lot more energy
Because of the changes mentioned above, your body is able to cope with more work or exercise without becoming as tired as quickly. Your body is able to burn fuel (i.e. Food) much more efficiently and is able to transport that fuel to your muscles much quicker and more efficiently. Like the engine of your car, if you look after it, give it the right fuel and regular maintenance, it will not only give you better performance, it will last you a great deal longer and be more reliable when you need it.
Stretching and Abdominals
The main gym has two areas for clients to stretch and carry out core abdominal exercises.
Each area has a range of different equipment including ab and back benches, swiss balls, medicine balls, bosu balls and balance pads.
As well as the stretching and abdominal exercises that you will receive as a part of your exercise program, there is a complete and comprehensive range of stretching posters and swill ball exercises that you can also try out.
